How can you tell if grout is sanded or unsanded?
There are two main types of grout: sanded and unsanded. Sanded grout is classified as a cement grout that has 1/8” or larger grit to it. Unsanded grout is a cement grout with less than 1/8” grit. Generally, unsanded grout is used for tile applications with narrower grout joints, from 1/16” to 1/8”.
Unsanded grout is extremely sticky and can be easily spread onto a vertical surface. It is ideal for use in grout lines where a regular grout might not adhere well.
Should I use sanded or unsanded grout
Unsanded grout is best used in joints that are less than 1/8 inch wide because it has a smooth texture and clings well to vertical surfaces. This makes it useful for grouting ceramic wall tiles. Sanded grout should be used in joints wider than 1/8 inch because it resists shrinkage and cracking.
Non-sanded grout is best used for vertical surfaces such as in the bathroom and showers. This grout is a better working material and sticks better to vertical surfaces than sanded grout. Sanded Grout: Sanded grout is used for joints that are greater than 1/8 inch.
Why would you use non sanded grout?
Unsanded grout is a type of grout that does not contain any silica aggregate filler. This makes it ideal for use on scratchable surfaces, such as some ceramic, glass, metal, marble, or natural stone tiles. Unsanded grout is also easier to work with than sanded grout on vertical surfaces, such as tiled shower walls.
